OUGD103 - End of module Self-Evaluation

(Only posted it on design practice, forgot to post it on here, also)

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

This module has allowed me to explore a diverse range of media outcomes for an assortment of set projects. For the Communication is a virus brief, for example, we created an installation piece in Leeds consisting of bunting, posters, 3D boxes and leaflets that kept a consistent identity but applied in an unusual way. It allowed me to experiment with an approach I was unfamiliar with, giving insight into what can actually be achieved and how.

Ongoing self-analysis was key. Unlike other modules, I wanted to evaluate and review my work consistently and this was evident especially in the Speaking from Experience brief. Typically, I set on one idea during the initials stages of the development process, forcing myself not to explore and develop other concepts. However, the suggestions noted in the progress crit influenced my designs significantly as I changed my initial concept in order to coincide with the feedback I received.

2. What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

As this was the last module, I wanted to apply everything I have learnt in the first year in order to gather a diverse range of information from a variety of sources, both primary and secondary. Throughout the set time scale, research was ongoing and it was constantly affecting my design choices – whether this be a change in user activity on a website or simply a choice of colour; it was all affected by ongoing research. However, the forms of this aforementioned research were relatively generic; I used the internet, for the most part, to gather secondary research whereas the primary research was in the form of questionnaires and surveys. In the past year, I have collected and resourced many design-orientated sites and blogs, which I believe, has influenced my approach to graphic design for the best. It has provided a mass resource of design applied in various media.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I constantly strive to create an aesthetically pleasing design, which not only answers the brief effectively, but gives my design work on a whole, a sense of identity and personality.  However, I am still not sure whether this is evident in my designs.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?

As the first year on this course is centered on experimentation and trying new ideas, I should have tried to apply my design work to multiple forms of media and not stick solely with digital/web. Although familiar with these processes, other deliverables, techniques and processes would provide me with a range of design choices. In future assignments, although now graded and more focused, I will try to address other possible outcomes and create a thorough body of work to show I have explored all aspects.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

Constantly review my work in reference to the brief. Simply re-reading the brief and making sure what it outlines is applied to my work will be the difference between a pass and a fail.

Always ask for feedback – whether it be off the tutors or my peers and no matter what form of response I get, it will always prove beneficial.

Don’t leave things to the last minute. In the Speaking from Experience brief, I intended to create a fully functioning, interactive website but this was not feasible in the time scale I set. Although I am able to create a design interface and user interaction for a website, I have limited knowledge of coding and transforming a still design into a functioning site. I therefore had to ask a friend to help me out. I hope to research more into this field, however, so I can apply the technique to future design outcomes.

Explore a range of concepts. Don’t just stick with the initial idea as this will probably not be the best answer to the brief. I need to devise a thorough project plan so I don’t become too ahead of myself and begin designing during the initial stages where I should still be exploring new ideas.

Use different media. Don’t just use what I familiar with – think outside the box.

Website can be viewed here and relevant work including signage icons etc can be found on my design practice blog.

InDesign Workshop

Despite a lack of organisation, I really enjoyed this brief, especially experimenting with primary sourced photographic imagery and text using InDesign. Although I used the program during my last course, I was able to develop my skills even more through the software workshop and simply through experimentation and manipulation. Although the context aspect was evident - through thorough research etc, I wish I looked at more possible design outcomes though this is probably due to the lack of initial designs.

Speaking from Experience - Final Crit Feedback

Very helpful feedback - they suggested I needed some brief insturctions, however, into how the site can be navigated (though this was hindered by the fact I had only one page fully interactive) therefore I will make sure I incorporate this into the home page.

The speaking from experience brief has been one of the most enjoyable I've had - allowing me to encompass all the skills I have learnt so far and showcasing what sort of designer I want to be. The progress crits throughout have allowed me to explore routes/aspects I would have otherwise ignored and made me reflect on the design process as a whole. Although I could have explored various other media, techniques and processes (ones that I am not so familar with), I am pleased with the resolution and hopefully it would be something the 1st year students would benefit from.

Speaking from Experience - Progress Crit

The progress crit went well as everyone seemed to like the idea. However, it was suggested I could push the concept further, creating signage around the college. I originally planned on doing this but got sidetracked with the interactive website. I will need to choose a set colour palette as currently, I have one, individual colour per facility/resource. However, I decided in the crit to have all general resources i.e. Toilets, canteen, first aid, reception etc in dark grey and the main design facilities in their own unique colour. This will be referenced in the signage around the college in order to keep a consistent corporate identity.

I will now explore various design ideas for guides and signs to plaster all over college using the icons I have already produced and the same design aesthetics as the website.

Speaking from Experience - Progress crit

The progress crit provided me various directions I could take my concept in. As I wanted to devise a handbook consisting of a basic introduction to each facility/resource/area of college alongside a gallery of work, timetables, pricing etc, they suggested that I needed to simplify the content.

It was noted that the icons could be used as signage around college to help first year students find their way around college during their first couple of weeks of term. The current signage is not as clear or direct - it simply states a room number; and many people in the crit said they never used these but had instead, asked others to guide them. Perhaps I could create a more refined handbook using signage as the main concept whilst still incorporating a brief introduction as to what each facility/resource is and how it can benefit first year graphic design students.

Speaking from Experience - Workshop

For the 'Speaking from experience' workshop, we were required to bring 5 examples of problems we've faced since accepting a place on the course; 5 things we wanted to create and 5 subjects/concepts we wanted to explore (as outlined in a previous post). Me and chris initially worked together to discuss these ideas and decide which had the most potential. After 5 were chosen, we were then asked of 5 ways of solving each of these individual problems. To explore these in more depth once again, we were asked to think of 5 deliverables for each of these problem solving ideas.

After devising an extensive idea sheet, we needed to pick 2 to form two different rationales. This was given to someone else chosen at random, in this case, Liv to then analyse and provide another perspective on our idea. One idea Liv suggested was a poster series indicating what process has been took for it to be printed; such as 'This was screen printed' etc.

The two ideas were as follows:

Communication is a Virus - Designs in Location

Despite not being able to put the deliverables up in our desired location, we decided woodhouse square would be a great alternative. Students walk past this park every day and as the weather is improving, more and more people are using it as a communal area. We added bunting along the fences, posters (of varying sizes) on trees, benches and walls and added the boxes nearby. These photos taken by Beth the day after we put the posters/bunting/3D installations in the park.

Communication is a Virus - Crit feedback

Initial crit

Look at other forms of media and experiment with a combination of different approaches
- 3D installations in public view
- Possibly 3D type
- Carrier bags
- Non permanent markings

Quotes could relate to the area or setting in which it is placed

Find areas in Leeds to place installations/posters
- Either busy or secluded dependent on the quote
- Possibly in a range of different areas

Shorter quotes are more practical
- Easier to read
- Easier to digest

Jo and Amber mentioned the following artists/designers as their work seemed fitting for our concept:

Jeni Holzer
- Type in the environment
Ian Hamilton-Finley
David Shrigley
Paul Curtis

Design is About Doing - Final designs & crit

The 3 basic principles of design are to persuade, inform or instruct.

Issues raised:

  • Look at combining the 3D type (earlier design ideas) within the set of 3 as this concept seemed to be more effective.
  • Focus on the typographic forum without using imagery - possibly remove the TV's so the type is the predominant feature.
  • Look at having more variation between the 3 posters.

From the feedback received during the crit, I removed the televisions from the designs to keep the imagery solely type-based and added a subtle background to enhance the 3D aspect, especially with the second design.

Design is About Doing - Chosen concept

For the 'Design is About Doing' brief, we are required to create 3 typographic posters based on the word, 'opposites' as part of a live brief for HOW books. They are currently accepting any design work which has a typography focus to be considered for submission and printed in an upcoming book entitled 'Letter, Word, Sentence, Paragraph'.

Chosen opposite

2D and 3D

Concept

How 2D type transforms into 3D and vice versa
2D net into 3D type; conversely, a 2D shadow of 3D text
Possibly 3D and then photographed or created digitally
